I’m not a binge-watcher or big fan of tv and even I know that typically, in an ensemble cast, only one or two characters evolve in a season, but all of Ted Lasso’s characters, who’ve become such personal friends that I find myself shouting “Go Richmond” at the top of my lungs over a fictional match in a sport I don’t even care about, EVOLVE IN GORGEOUS AND UNPREDICTABLE WAYS under Ted and Beard’s canny leadership.
Read MoreTed spends the whole show spotting potential in people and inviting them into it, saying things like "I have a real tricky time hearing folks that don't believe in themselves," which sounds ridiculous and it is, but you can't help but trust the guy because it feels good to be around someone who believes so firmly in himself for no reason other than he decided to.
Do you see where I'm going with this?
On April 21, 2010, I sat down on my green front porch in West Texas, gazing over my vegetable garden, and read this:
After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace [who imparts His blessing and favor], who called you to His own eternal glory in Christ, will Himself complete, confirm, strengthen, and establish you [making you what you ought to be]. 1Peter 5:10
So many of us are waiting for a thunderbolt moment, but this wasn’t that. It was more like a fresh awareness, a breeze of possibility that blew through my mind.
I got up, jotted that scripture down, and stuck it by my bed. Sitting there, still a little stunned, I said out loud to God and myself:
“If that scripture is true, then it’s not my job to figure out who I’m supposed to be. It’s yours, and I just have to follow you.”
Here I am 11 years later, sitting on my porch in Florida with my bible and coffee, knowing deeper than I know anything, there is no going back, because He, Jesus, has the words of eternal life.
Where else can I go?

How would it feel to be surrounded by a bunch of new friends doing the exact same thing?
Read MoreThe hard truth is you can't steer a horse that won't move his feet. You have to get him moving first, come what may and that's what scares people...the bucking unknown.
Right now, some of you are sitting on a young, scared horse and pulling its head around trying to control an outcome that hasn't happened yet.
You have to know that your fear is keeping you from your potential.

How do I raise kind, conscious children?
How do I leave the world better than I found it?
Why do people abuse animals and how can I make that stop?
What can I do about systemic racism and move the justice needle in my lifetime?
See, you have a destiny on your life and until you get busy doing that thing you were created to do, and loving a bunch of people along the way, your rut will only get narrower and deeper. It’s not about chasing happiness, it’s about living in your good purpose.
“But what do I do? I’ve tried everything and nothing changes,” you moan.
We get it. We’ve been there, but we got out.

ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS BEGIN.
Read MoreOn Tuesday, I got back from Montana after hosting the FIFTH Intermissionary Retreat. I spent a whole week listening to people tell their REAL stories; you know the ones that live just behind the masks we all wear. Life is so much harder and more beautiful than we let on to each other. It’s no wonder people love retreats.
Anyway, here’s my hunch: It’s not that we don’t know we want to do with our lives, it’s just that our purpose is usually buried under a pile of crap, and 90% of that crap comes in the form of old, bad, lying stories we tell about things that have happened to us. We don’t even realize we do it.
