Happy 11th Birthday to Me!

On April 21, 2010, I sat down on my green front porch in West Texas, gazing over my vegetable garden, and read this:

After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace [who imparts His blessing and favor], who called you to His own eternal glory in Christ, will Himself complete, confirm, strengthen, and establish you [making you what you ought to be]. 1Peter 5:10

So many of us are waiting for a thunderbolt moment, but this wasn’t that. It was more like a fresh awareness, a breeze of possibility that blew through my mind.

I got up, jotted that scripture down, and stuck it by my bed. Sitting there, still a little stunned, I said out loud to God and myself:

“If that scripture is true, then it’s not my job to figure out who I’m supposed to be. It’s yours, and I just have to follow you.”

Here I am 11 years later, sitting on my porch in Florida with my bible and coffee, knowing deeper than I know anything, there is no going back, because He, Jesus, has the words of eternal life.

Where else can I go?

Time to Move Our Feet

The hard truth is you can't steer a horse that won't move his feet. You have to get him moving first, come what may and that's what scares people...the bucking unknown.

Right now, some of you are sitting on a young, scared horse and pulling its head around trying to control an outcome that hasn't happened yet.

You have to know that your fear is keeping you from your potential.

38 days till 2021

But here's the thing. The God I serve wastes nothing, and while 2020 feels like a blowout there's no way that can be true. It's more likely that things less splashy than scooter rides along the Mediterranean have been happening under the surface all along. I just can't see them and they feel less fun.

Truthfully, I probably needed to pump the brakes on a few things, and since I wasn't doing it, 2020 pumped them for me.

What Is Your Question?

So your big question matters a lot because it’s God’s way of throwing breadcrumbs and leading you toward his purpose for creating you. You’ll likely have more than one question over the course of your life, but for right now, what is it? What won’t leave you alone?

  • How do I raise kind, conscious children?

  • How do I leave the world better than I found it?

  • Why do people abuse animals and how can I make that stop?

  • What can I do about systemic racism and move the justice needle in my lifetime?

How to Get Strong and Free.

So if you’re resigned to fear, inertia, boredom, isolation, selfishness, or aimlessness, YOU ARE NOT FREE. All that stuff is diminishing you, stealing your potential and keeping you from your good life purpose.

I’m not saying my life is easy now, it’s just hard in different ways. I had to confront my own fear, shame, loneliness, anxiety and love of control. Believe me, it’s a process, but you can’t get free and whole without swimming that moat, and the only way you become a good swimmer is by swimming.

Ready for the Deep End?

Are you wanting to get out of the pew and into the world, bringing love, light and good news, but you're not clear how?

Maybe you'd like to off load some of your blessing to someone who really needs it - do a little justice and mercy - but where and how and to whom?

Maybe you want to love God and love others in a radical way, like Jesus did, but handing out tracts seems ineffective and you've got concerns about short-term missions.

I Need Direction But God Is Quiet

I think Jesus wanted to expose the central issue behind our fear: We don't know God's love for us. If we think God will be disappointed if we rush out ahead and fall down, we're unlikely to move very much.

But if He's your good father, won't he scamper up behind you, giggle a little at your daring, pick you up and brush you off? Then place your feet somewhere more suited to your skill level?

Doesn't it feel better to believe that about him?
