On Tuesday, I got back from Montana after hosting the FIFTH Intermissionary Retreat. I spent a whole week listening to people tell their REAL stories; you know the ones that live just behind the masks we all wear. Life is so much harder and more beautiful than we let on to each other. It’s no wonder people love retreats.

Anyway, here’s my hunch: It’s not that we don’t know we want to do with our lives, it’s just that our purpose is usually buried under a pile of crap, and 90% of that crap comes in the form of old, bad, lying stories we tell about things that have happened to us. We don’t even realize we do it.

Super Tom - The Example

I’ve heard the words “Tom what’s your location?” spoken over his radio a dozen times by a dozen people in a thirty-minute span, yet somehow Tom always had time to stop and shake a man’s hand and to look him in the eye. How is that possible?

It's possible because Tom was a full-time construction worker in the Kingdom of God, building stuff that makes earth look more like heaven.

What's Your Fragrance?

These days a lot of Christians are leaving a fragrance behind them that smells more like dog poop than honeysuckle, all the while telling people this is how Jesus smells. ⠀

But that's a lie and people are not stupid. They avoid and reject the fragrance of dog poop, as well they should. ⠀

Five Ways to Love in the Time of Trump

Perhaps if we had less courage, we would have spoken of everything but executive orders,walls and refugees detained at the airport. But we love each other and, perhaps like you, we want to act like Jesus in our new political climate. We just don't know how.

As we talked, my sweet friend paid me a high compliment.

"I know you believe differently than I do," she said. " But thank you for making this a safe place to talk about it."
