SMR Day Six - Repetition + Time = Change

Twenty-five years ago I was told I had an incurable autoimmune disorder and I’d be on medication for the rest of my life. (Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.)

About five years ago, I started reading books by people who had the same condition and reversed it using lifestyle changes and autoimmune protocols. The latter BTW is a fancy way of saying “eating like a sober monk."

Today:

🌸 I no longer drink coffee.
🌸 I rarely eat added sugar.
🌸 I don’t eat wheat.
🌸 I eat very little dairy.
🌸 Oh and I rarely drink wine anymore.

“Wait, weren’t coffee, chocolate, wine, cheese, and bread the building blocks of your food pyramid Erin?"

Yes, that’s why I love France so much.

This behavior is hardly unheard of. Many people have woken up to the fact that refusing to eat the standard American diet makes your body so much happier.

But how do you make changes like this, in some cases breaking life long addictions to things like caffeine and sugar?

Repetition + Time = Change.

The first AI protocol I did nearly killed me, but after 30 days I felt like a different person and when I could drink coffee again, I drank less.

The second one I did, also nearly killed me, but when I started eating “normally” again everything tasted way too sweet, so I ate berries and greens instead.

The sixth and seventh ones, which were an accidental combination of Lent + Quarantine, we're actually pretty easy.

Now, things I thought I couldn't live without are gone, and I only miss them when my emotional eating patterns arise. = I’m sad, I want pie. That's another post, I promise.

I’m telling you that to tell you this:

Sometimes we have to take several stabs at a new habit, especially if they are big ones like cutting out sugar, becoming a non-smoker, or going gluten-free because we’re confronting life-long emotional and physical addictions.

But if we keep stabbing, eventually we kill those suckers.

So what if it takes the Whole 30 x 4 to realize that your body and your spirit know exactly what they want. A big glass of water and hug usually.

Big changes are usually cumulative. So if you’re trying to change an old, unhealthy habit into a new life-giving one, and you haven’t licked it after the first try, just keep trying, maybe for 30 day stretches or micro-steps every day for a year.

Cold turkey is overrated.
