What's The Gift In This?

Do you feel lately like you’re running the 100m hurdles, except the race is not 100m, it’s all the way around the track, twice, and the hurdles are every 20 feet?

You could be forgiven for thinking that. Happy First Birthday Covid!

My mom wound up in the hospital ten days ago and I’ve been hanging around Arizona ever since. That was unexpected, but she's doing much better, thanks for asking.

Typically, when things go according to my well-laid plans, I think everything’s good, but when they don’t, I think it’s bad. But really, how do I know what’s “good or bad?" Doesn't manure grow flowers?

💥 Sure, I don't like it, but since I can’t see the whole picture, do I really know?

💥 Do I secretly expect a hurdle-free life and believe anything less is a deviation? Why?

💥 Also, won't I be a stronger and better runner with hurdles than without?

Stoic philosopher Epictetus said:

"Don’t hope events will turn out the way you want, welcome events in whichever way they happen; this is the path to peace.”

So if it's peace I want, I have to quit resisting what is, because complaining adds more hurdles to my race and a 30lb backpack full of rocks. I still have to run this sucker, why make it harder on myself?

Jesus said, in this world, you will have trouble darling. Cheer up, I’ve overcome the world. John 16:33 (Firegirl Version)

If you’re struggling with Covid fatigue and all the hurdles in your own life, take it easy for a second and notice your thoughts, your judgments, and your words. Are you adding extra hurdles to your race? If so, change course by asking yourself: What's the gift in this?

Then go looking for the answer.
